This reflection is unfortunately not a post for her high school yearbook (though that was not so long ago), but a farewell tribute to my niece, MacKenzie Elizabeth Knights, Peter and Betsy Conroy’s youngest daughter, who left us suddenly and all too soon. Making us hopefully even more aware of how precious and unpredictable life is.
Kenz, as she was widely known, was active and athletic starting at an early age with swimming and hockey. Petite, cute and blonde, with a big heart and strong legs, she was a runner at heart. Kenz found comfort, as many of us do by staying active, but running was her true passion. She knew the value of stretching and regularly practiced yoga and instructed classes.
An avid baker and cook, Kenz, who studied culinary arts while at St Johnsbury Academy, would often bring decadent chocolate desserts to family gatherings to sweeten things up!
When at a family gathering at Mom and Dads, one would often find her stretched out with Boomer and Iggy on the floor by the warm fire. She was an animal love and especially loved her cat Marco.
Kenz shared a special bond with her father, my wonderful brother Peter, who loved her with all of his heart. And with her Aunt Kim who was a confidant and hiking buddie. She was also close with Grammie Knights and would pop over to say Hi to Mom and Dad, bringing goodies she’s made, sending thoughtful holiday cards, and making the lovely ceramic vases she often brought flowers in.
Kenz was complicated-- aren’t we all. She struggled with Orthorexia nervosa for many years which ultimately led to her crossing over at an early age. My deep belief in God gives me comfort knowing she is at peace. In my mind, I see Kenz bounding effortlessly through expansive green meadows and thickly wooded trails, waving to us from a distance, with a big and radiant smile on her beautiful face.
Farewell my dear sweet niece, rest in peace, you are sorely missed, but we will meet again.
Much love, Aunt Pam
