I had the fortune to know Mackenzie for the past 10 years through some really good times and some really hard times. What I remember most is that she had a fierce determination and incredible compassion, even when she was sick. She wanted to teach the next generation of physicians about what it was like to be a teenager/young adult with a significant chronic illness. She taught them about communication and compassion and made them understand that a patient’s story mattered. She was not to be defined by her disease. I am grateful that I was able to be alongside her, getting to know her, and hopefully getting her story right.
